The environments are also wonderful to look at, whether they are levels in the main campaign, templates in snapmap, or multiplayer mapsĭoom requires you to play extremely fast, and this is a unique selling point. The entire package feels like a FPS shooter gone wrong, on steroids, and has an unnecessary hatred for all things demon-like. Shooting feels great, moving feels great, and killing feels great. The best thing about Doom is its gameplay. Hidden environment interactions are exciting in the campaign because of how rare they appear, and some lead to great fan service (we’ll come to this later).

Before I dissect each main mode individually however, let’s talk about some of the main gameplay aspects that apply to the game as a whole. This is slightly frustrating since the load times aren’t fast, and seems alien when most other games need no such system. An issue with switching between these in a single session is that the game has to reboot itself every time you want to play in a different main mode.

Inspired in almost every aspect from the previous entries in the series (but mainly the original Doom), this is a fresh take on the 20-year-old formula, and within this attempt are features and gameplay mechanics that still keep it relevant today. There is no denying there are faults with Doom, but it is this core aspect of having fun that keeps me excited to play Doom time and time again, and leaves me wanting more of this revitalised formula in the close future.ĭoom acts as a reboot, but has its own self-contained story for the most part.
Doom is many things, but most importantly, it is fun. Doom captures the very essence of what video games can and should provide as an experience, and what video games are at their very core. Blowing the heads off demons with a super shotgun while sprinting through the halls of hell is a scenario that Doom can execute beautifully, and it feels absolutely awesome to play out such a scenario.
